On 14 October 2025, the Centre for Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization (CSAM) of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) co-organized a National Governance and Innovation Forum on Food Loss Reduction alongside the 2025 World Agrifood Innovation Conference (WAFI) in Beijing. The forum was held in collaboration with the Academy of Global Food Economics and Policy (AGFEP) of China Agricultural University; the China Offices of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), World Food Programme (WFP); the Champions 12.3 coalition; and the Institute of Food and Nutrition Development of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China.

Aiming to strengthen policy frameworks and technological innovation, the forum brought together around 80 participants from government agencies, international organizations, research and educational institutions, and the private sector. Participants explored how enhanced governance mechanisms and technological interventions can address challenges faced by developing countries in reducing post-harvest losses, improving productivity, and enhancing food security. Discussions highlighted the importance of modern grain reserve systems, policy mechanisms, and advanced mechanization-based technologies in building resilience, minimizing waste, and supporting rural communities, particularly smallholder farmers. The event emphasized the role of mechanized harvesting, digital solutions, and efficient storage systems in improving food loss management, as well as the value of international cooperation and South-South exchanges in scaling up proven approaches. The forum also reaffirmed the critical importance of governance, innovation, and partnership in strengthening global food system resilience.

The 2025 World Agrifood Innovation Conference (WAFI) focused on global collaboration in technology, governance, and sustainable practices under the theme “Resilient Food Supply for Agrifood Systems Transformation”
